Heritage listed carport restoration
A heritage listed carport rebuilt on a galvanised steel portal, with an LVL roof, a western red cedar shingled gable and a louvred vent matched to the original.
The structure had to carry a full roof on a narrow footprint hard against the street boundary, so it is built on a galvanised steel portal rather than timber posts. The frame is bolted at every connection and set out off the new slab, which keeps the span clear and gets the posts out of the driveway width.
LVL rafters run off the portal to a ridge, battened and sarked, then insulated between the rafters so the underside could be lined and finished rather than left open. On a heritage listing, the parts you do not see still get documented. The fixings, the sarking laps and the insulation all had to be right before anything was covered.
The gable is clad in western red cedar shingles laid to a set gauge, with a louvred vent on the centre line and a moulded barge. Those details are what the listing is actually protecting, so they were matched to the original profiles and set out from the centre so the shingle courses run symmetrically either side of the vent.
